Elliptical Calories Calculator

A 70 kg person using an elliptical at moderate effort burns about 184 kcal in 30 minutes, roughly 6.1 kcal per minute. Vigorous effort raises that to around 257 kcal. Elliptical consoles frequently overstate burn by 20% or more.

What is elliptical calories calculator?

The elliptical gives a low-impact cardiovascular workout that resembles running without the ground impact, which makes it popular during injury rehabilitation.

Because the machine moves your legs for you, effort depends heavily on how much resistance and arm work you actually apply — which is why machine readouts and MET estimates diverge.

How calories burned are calculated

Every activity has a MET value — a metabolic equivalent where 1 MET is the energy you use sitting still. This calculator uses the ACSM metabolic equation, which converts a MET value and your body weight into a calorie burn rate. MET values come from the Compendium of Physical Activities, a standard reference used in exercise research. Pick the intensity that matches what you actually did; the table below shows every option and its MET value.

kcal per minute = MET × 3.5 × body weight (kg) ÷ 200
Total kcal = kcal per minute × duration (minutes)

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose metric (kg) or imperial (lb).
  2. Enter your body weight.
  3. Enter how long you exercised, in minutes.
  4. Select the intensity that best matches your effort — each option shows its MET value.
  5. Read your total burn, the per-minute rate, and the equivalent time walking.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the machine display a higher number?

Consoles use stride count and a generic formula without knowing your true effort or fitness. Independent testing has repeatedly found readouts 20–40% above measured burn.

Does using the handles matter?

Yes. Actively pushing and pulling the arm bars engages the upper body and raises total burn meaningfully compared with letting them move passively.

Is elliptical as good as running?

For cardiovascular fitness at matched heart rate, broadly yes. It lacks the impact loading that benefits bone density, so runners get something the elliptical does not provide.

How long should I use it?

Guidelines suggest 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week. Thirty minutes at moderate effort is a reasonable single session.
